The Basque coast is no secret anymore. In 2026, popular villages fill their car parks by 11am on summer weekends, and famous spots like Gaztelugatxe need a reservation. The good news is that a road trip here still works well if you plan the order of your stops, start early and know which villages to pair together. This guide gives you a route that follows the green coast from the French border to Bilbao.

Why the Basque Coast Feels Different

This is not the Spain of beach resorts and sun loungers. The Basque Country faces the Atlantic, and the coast is a line of steep green hills, grey-blue sea and small fishing harbours squeezed into narrow bays. Basque (Euskara) is spoken everywhere, and you will see it on every sign. Learn two words: kaixo (hello) and eskerrik asko (thank you). People notice.

The food culture is the other big difference. Villages here are built around the harbour and the grill. Fish comes off the boat, goes over charcoal and lands on your table within hours. Add cider houses, local white wine and a strong local identity, and you get a coast that feels proud rather than packaged.

Gipuzkoa Villages: Hondarribia, Pasai Donibane, Getaria and Zumaia

Hondarribia

Start at the French border. Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía in Spanish) has two personalities. The walled upper town has stone mansions and a quiet main square. Down by the water, the La Marina quarter has wooden balconies painted in blues, reds and greens. In the evening, the pintxo bars on Calle San Pedro fill with locals, and the noise of conversation spills onto the cobbles.

Pasai Donibane

Twenty minutes west, Pasai Donibane is one long street squeezed between a cliff and a narrow channel. You reach it by a short boat ride from Pasai San Pedro, which costs about €1. Victor Hugo stayed here in 1843, and his house is now a small museum. Come in the late afternoon, when the day-trippers have gone.

Getaria

Getaria is the star of the Gipuzkoa stretch. It is the birthplace of the fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga (see the museum above the town) and of the explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano. Walk the old port at lunchtime, when the smell of charcoal smoke and sea salt comes from the street grills. Fish is cooked whole, and the grills never seem to stop.

Zumaia

Zumaia is about 10 minutes beyond Getaria. Its flysch cliffs show 60 million years of rock layers, tilted like pages of a book. You can walk along the base at low tide, so check the timetable first. Guided walks run most of the year, and the beach at Itzurun is a good place to stop.

Bizkaia Villages: Lekeitio, Elantxobe, Mundaka and Gaztelugatxe

Crossing into Bizkaia, the road gets narrower and the hills steeper. Lekeitio has a wide sandy beach and the small island of San Nicolás, which you can walk to at low tide. Be sure to check the tide table, since the path floods. Nearby Ondarroa has houses stacked above its river, with a pretty bridge in the middle.

Elantxobe is the most dramatic village on the route. Its houses cling to a cliff above a tiny harbour, and roads curve down to the water in tight bends. The sound of rope clinking against masts and gulls overhead makes it feel far from any city. Park at the top and walk down.

Mundaka sits inside the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve and is known for one of Europe’s best left-hand surf waves. Even if you never touch a board, watching surfers from the harbour wall is worth an hour. Bermeo, nearby, is a working fishing port with an anchovy tradition.

Finish at Gaztelugatxe, the island hermitage reached by 241 stone steps. At the top, you ring the bell three times and make a wish. Visits require an online reservation, so book it before you plan the rest of the day.

Pro Tip: Book your Gaztelugatxe slot for the first morning time you can get, and check the current rules and fee on the official Bizkaia tourism site, because they have changed in recent years. Then drive to Mundaka or Bermeo for lunch. Parking near the hermitage fills fast, and by 11am the stairs are crowded.

Where to Eat and Drink Along the Route

In Getaria, grilled turbot (rodaballo) is the classic order. Elkano is the famous Michelin-starred option, with a tasting-style meal that often costs €100 or more per person. For a cheaper version, try Kaia-Kaipe, which does grilled fish with sea views. At the street grills, a plate of fish can cost under €25.

In Hondarribia, spend an evening on Calle San Pedro and order pintxos one bar at a time. In Pasai Donibane, Casa Cámara is known for seafood, especially lobster. In Bizkaia, choose any harbour restaurant in Mundaka or Bermeo and ask for the daily fish. Inland, sidrerías (cider houses) serve cod omelette, a thick steak and cider from the barrel. These are usually busiest from January to April.

Getting There and Getting Around

The nearest airports are Bilbao and San Sebastián (the latter in Hondarribia). Both have flights from Madrid, Barcelona and several European cities. By train, Renfe runs Madrid to San Sebastián and Bilbao in roughly five hours. Spain’s high-speed network is still being finished in the Basque Country: the “Basque Y” is not fully open, so do not expect an AVE-style fast link to every village in 2026.

The coast itself works best by car, since several of the best villages are off the rail line. Rental cars run about €40–70 a day in high season. Pick up in Bilbao or San Sebastián and drop off in the other to avoid backtracking.

Without a car, you can still do much of the route. Euskotren trains run along the coast from San Sebastián to Zumaia, and also from Bilbao to Mundaka and Bermeo. Lurraldebus services run from San Sebastián to Hondarribia and Getaria. Be ready for fewer services on Sundays and in the evening.

Day Trip or Overnight?

From San Sebastián, Hondarribia and Pasai Donibane work easily as half-day trips. Getaria and Zumaia can be a full day. From Bilbao, Mundaka and Gaztelugatxe form a natural day trip, and Elantxobe and Lekeitio can be added if you drive.

But a day trip means arriving with the crowds and leaving before dinner. If you can, sleep in one village. Getaria, Mundaka and Lekeitio are the best bases. In the evening the day-trippers leave, the harbour lights come on and restaurants fill with locals. Three nights lets you cover the whole route without hurrying.

2026 Budget Reality

Basque villages cost more than inland Spain, especially in July and August. Here are realistic daily costs per person in 2026, not including a rental car.

  • Budget (€70–95): A guesthouse or hostel bed, pintxos for lunch, a simple menu del día and local buses or trains.
  • Mid-range (€130–180): A three-star hotel or small inn in a village, a sit-down fish lunch, wine and a few activities such as a flysch tour.
  • Comfortable (€250–400): A boutique hotel with sea views, a long lunch at a top grill and a rental car with parking.

Expect double rooms in villages to cost €90–140 in shoulder season and often €160–250 in August. Car parking runs about €10–25 a day, and some villages push day visitors to paid lots on the edge of town.

Practical Tips and What Has Changed Since 2024

The biggest change since 2024 is access control. Popular spots now rely on reservations, timed entries and paid parking to manage crowds. Check each place before you go. Some Basque towns have also moved toward tourist taxes, so ask your hotel whether one is added to your bill.

Lunch usually runs from 1:30pm to 3:30pm, and many kitchens close until 8pm. Book restaurants ahead for weekends. Roads are well kept but narrow, and village streets can be tight, so a small car is easier to manage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do you need for a Basque coast road trip?

Three days is a comfortable minimum for the route from Hondarribia to Bilbao. That gives you time for two or three villages per day without rushing meals. With four or five days, you can add Gernika, Oñati or a slow afternoon on the beach in Zarautz.

Do you need a car to visit Basque villages?

A car gives the most freedom, especially for Elantxobe and Gaztelugatxe. But you can reach Hondarribia, Pasai Donibane, Getaria, Zumaia and Mundaka by bus, Euskotren or ferry. Plan around timetables, which become thinner on Sundays and in the evening.

When is the best time to visit the Basque coast?

May, June and September are best. Temperatures sit around 18–24°C, villages are lively but not packed, and restaurants take bookings more easily. August is busy and expensive. Expect rain in any month; it is what keeps the hills so green, so pack a light waterproof.

Is Gaztelugatxe worth the effort?

Yes, if you book ahead and go early. The 241 steps to the hermitage and the view back along the coast are memorable. A reservation is required, and slots fill quickly in summer. Wear proper shoes, because the stone steps get slippery in wet weather.

What is txakoli and where can you try it?

Txakoli is a light, dry, slightly sparkling white wine from the Basque coast. Getaria is the heart of the Getariako Txakolina area, and many bars pour it from a height to add fizz. Try it with grilled anchovies or fish, for about €3–5 a glass.
